A mountain skills and wild camping course is ideal for those looking to embark upon an overnight excursion in the UK mountains.  We will be looking at the fundamental mountain skills with the added bonus of developing campcraft skills.

This is a 3 day mountain skills course that can run with up to 4 people.  This course will take a holistic approach to mountain skills, we are looking to teach you all areas of hill walking, with the added bonus of camping.  We will do one introductory day and undertake a mountain journey before heading onto the hill for a one night mini expedition where we will focus on our navigation and campcraft skills.   Undertaking a wild camping expedition is great fun and super exciting, it will help you hone your skills to be self sufficient on the hill. 

The course will meet at Honister Slate Mine and we will undertake a mountain journey from there.  Our mini expedition makes use of the Central Fells.  We can leave for the Central Fells from either of the following locations; Great Langdale, Honister, Seathwaite, Langstrath. 

COURSE OUTLINE

Planning 

How to successfully plan a walk in the mountains in the UK or Ireland.

Walking skills 

What things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills, steep ground etc.).

Clothing and equipment 

Being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.

Weather 

How it affects the mountains and your day out.

Navigation in the mountains 

Everything from selecting a compass and using a map to navigation in poor visibility and an intro to GPS.

Environmental knowledge

How to minimise your impact on the hill, information on good practice and useful organisations.

Hazards and emergency procedures in the mountains 

How to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Camp Craft 

Selecting and using appropriate tents and sleeping equipment. Choosing a good pitch and campsite. 

Nutrition 

Foods to eat, cookware systems and preparing to out on the hill for longer periods. 

Night Navigation 

We will make use of being our overnight and hone our navigation skills in the darkness.

Wild camping course and mountain expedition

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, YOU CAN EXPECT TO

Be able to plan routes effectively and tackle them in all weather 

Have the confidence to move away from marked paths and into steeper, rockier terrain and know more about the differences in weather, navigation and managing risk in the mountain environment.

Be able to confidently navigate in mountainous terrain using a series of techniques such as timing, pacing and contour interpretation

 Have confidence to head out overnight safely in a tent and set up appropriately for a comfortable and safe night out

Course Ratios

1:4 Ratio 

This is an open course designed for you to meet like minded individuals 

An instructor can teach up to 4 people on this course - we can provide additional instructors adhering to a 1:4 ratio. 

Minimum of 2 for courses to run

We can run bespoke courses all year round, please get in touch to organise a private course for you and your group

Pre-Requisites 

16+ yrs to attend this course

Under 18's must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian 

 

Basic hill walking experience 

 

A high level of fitness is required from the Hill Skills course, as we will access higher mountain areas be out for longer 

 

We want to help you develop your walking skills to be independent in the mountains so you can achieve all of your mountain walking aspirations 

Equipment

We will share kit lists with you during the booking stage

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing (warm and waterproof where possible) and suitable mountain footwear (boots)

A rucksack to carry everything you need for the day is advisable and big enough for overnight

We have a small selction of tents for hire.  Your sleeping arrangements will need to be your own. (sleeping bag and mat)

We are happy to discuss your requirements and kit for camping.

Venue

The course will meet at Honister Slate Mine for a mountain journey on day 1 

 

We will then undertake a 2 day mountain journey in the central fells, leaving from any of the following destinations; 

Great Langdale, Honister, Seathwaite, Langstrath. 

We will be out overnight between day 2 and 3 with a night navigation exercise to help refine your skills.

Mountain Training is the collection of awarding bodies for skills courses and qualifications in walking, climbing and mountaineering that operates across the UK and The Republic Of Ireland.

Our qualifications train and assess people to look after other people in these environments, whether that's leading a walk in the mountains, coaching in a climbing wall or teaching multi pitch rock climbing. People who hold our qualifications have been assessed at a nationally agreed standard.
