The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you’ll never look back.
To get started on the Mountain Leader qualification you need to meet the following prerequisites:

You must be at least 18 years old

You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of mountain walking

You should have an interest in leading groups in the mountains

You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland (you can join one when you register if you're not already a member) - find out why
If you can meet all of the above requirements, here's what to do next:

Create an account on our Candidate Management System or log in if you already have one.

Register for the Mountain Leader scheme (this costs £65)
The Mountain Leader scheme enables experienced mountain walkers to lead groups in in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland in summer conditions.

Join Lake District Mountaineering to undertake a six day Mountain Leader training course in the North-West Lakes. Hone your skills in the mountains of Buttermere, Ennerdale and Borrowdale with our expert trainers.

Join Lake District Mountaineering to undertake your Mountain Leader assessment. We will do our best to help you succeed so you have the confidence to come and show us your skills on this five day assessment course.

Course was fantastic. Sam was excellent at teaching us the ins and outs of orienteering and mountain skills and safety, and lots of interesting facts and tips too, over the 2 days. This all came in very handy as first day we had fantastic weather and clear conditions, followed by wet, low visibility conditions the next day, which was an excellent opportunity to put what we learnt into practice. Would highly recommend this course (with Sam specifically), and will be looking to do some more in the future.

This is the second course that I have booked with Lake District Mountaineering and I have already booked the next. The reason that I keep returning is finding a great instructor in Sam. Each time I have taken a lot from the day and I think this is down to the knowledge being shared in an easily understandable and practical way.
